Ask Me Anything! – U.S. Clinical Experience, virtual & in-person

When: October 21, 2026 10:00 a.m. CDT

An open hour for medical students and graduates, shaped around the questions we hear most often: how to choose a specialty, how placements come together, and what residency programs weigh in their match decision. You bring the questions and our team answers them on the spot.

Join a live Q&A with Dr. Samuel Lin

Q and A with Harvard Program Director: US Clinical & Research Opportunities

When: October 21, 2026 10:30 a.m. CDT

Join a live Q&A with Dr. Samuel Lin, Program Director of the Harvard Plastic Surgery Residency Program.

Dr. Lin sits on the other side of the table. As a residency Program Director, he reads the applications, sits in the rank meetings, and decides what a strong candidate looks like. Few speakers can speak from that vantage point, and fewer still are willing to answer questions about it openly.

What that means for you. The margin between an interview and a rejection is often smaller than applicants expect, and much of it is decided before the interview stage. Dr. Lin will walk through how his program reviews applications, what separates a compelling file from a qualified one, and where international medical students can strengthen their candidacy while there is still time.

What you’ll hear:

  • How the residency application process actually works, from the program side
  • What residency programs look for in applicants, and how international students are read in that process
  • How to build a competitive application and stand out in a crowded field

Bring your questions. This is a live Q&A, and Dr. Lin answers them directly.

Would you like us to run a webinar for your students?

We’ll host a session for your cohort, on your schedule, shaped around the students you serve.

Building your ERAS application

Where clinical experience and the letter of recommendation fit in the timeline

ERAS opens in June. Two of its heaviest pieces have to be built months before that, during clinical experience.

Clinical experience is the evidence. U.S. clinical experience puts a student inside the system they’re applying to. It gives the application proof a transcript can’t: they can do strong work in an American clinical setting.

The letter comes from someone who watched them work. A strong LoR is earned during the rotation. That relationship starts on day one of the placement, and it’s the one part of ERAS a student can’t prepare at the last minute.

The timeline that works:

  • Now through spring: Book the U.S. clinical experience that fills the gap in the application
  • During the rotation: Earn the relationship that becomes the letter
  • Last week of the rotation: Ask for the LoR while the preceptor has just seen them work
  • June: ERAS opens. Build the application and get letters uploaded
  • September: Applications go to programs, and the hard part is already behind you
